Manual Lymphatic Drainage: Post Cosmetic Surgery

Here at Balanced Bodies we specialise in the treatment of Lymphatic Drainage for people who have had cosmetic surgery. We treat every person as an individual with individual needs.

Cosmetic surgery is a controlled trauma, but it still has an impact on your body. The surgical area needs to recover and heal from all of the damage that was done in order for you not only look better now than before-but also long term as well! When there’s too much stress put onto these systems through excessive work load or lack thereof (like after lipoplasty), they can become overwhelmed which leads towards inflammation/swelling happening more often than necessary – ultimately leading back into overworked lymphatic system trying even harder just because its own job matters most at this point

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a type of gentle massage that is often used to reduce inflammation and oedema after cosmetic surgery. It is thought to work by helping to move fluid out of the tissues and into the lymphatic system, where it can be drained away. This can help to reduce swelling, bruising and pain.

There is some evidence that MLD may be effective in reducing inflammation and oedema after cosmetic surgery. A small study published in 2008 found that MLD was associated with a significant reduction in postoperative oedema and pain, compared to no treatment. Another study published in 2011 found that MLD was associated with a significant reduction in both inflammation and oedema, compared to standard postoperative care.

If you are considering MLD as a treatment option after your cosmetic surgery, it is important to discuss this with your surgeon beforehand. MLD should only be carried out by a qualified therapist, and it is important to make sure that they have experience in treating post-surgical patients. You should also let your surgeon know if you have any allergies or sensitivities, as some people may be allergic to the massage oils used during MLD.

In summary, manual lymphatic drainage may be an effective treatment for reducing inflammation and oedema after cosmetic surgery. It is important to discuss this with your surgeon beforehand, and make sure that you see a qualified therapist who has experience in treating post-surgical patients. Let your therapist know if you have any allergies or sensitivities, as some people may be allergic to the massage oils used during MLD.

There are many advantages for using specialist post-surgical therapies including MLD.

  • The lymphatic system is supported to make patients heal substantially faster
  • Anaesthetics are evacuated from the system more quickly
  • The inflammatory phase of recovery is sped up
  • Wound healing is accelerated
  • Scar tissue is laid down evenly
  • Complications can be rectified
  • Smooth, even results are achieved
  • Results are attained more quickly
  • Patients can return to their daily lives much sooner
  • Trained therapists provide a professional link between patient and surgeon, to report any issues, such as anaemia or infection or any unexpected problems.
  • Therapists also give much needed psychological support through recovery. Many patients completely underestimate the impact of their surgeries or how they will be affected emotionally.

How soon after surgery can I receive treatment?

We recommend that you start your treatment as soon as possible, preferably within the first few days. This depends on the individual, and we always recommend that you seek advice from your surgeon prior.

How many treatments do I require?

We recommend between 5-12 sessions depending on the area, procedure and recovering process which is different in each person. Also patients who get multiple procedures at once (lipo plus a tummy tuck or liposuction and a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) may need more than someone getting just one surgical procedure.
