Cranial Osteopathy
Cranial Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions which is gentle in its approach. It works with the structure and function of the body and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together. All Osteopaths are registered with General Osteopathic Council.
Cranial osteopathic treatment is very gentle and relaxing. During the treatment some people are aware of different sensations, such as mild tension, aching or sensitivity that gradually disappear, or of feelings of warmth and relaxation. Other people are unaware of anything happening at all during the treatment but are aware that they feel very different afterwards. Most people become deeply relaxed during treatment and it is not uncommon for people to fall asleep.
The cranial concept, as developed and taught by Dr. Sutherland, includes the following set of principles:
- The fluctuation of the cerebrospinal fluid, or the potency of the Tide
- The function of the reciprocal tension membrane
- The motility of the neural tube
- The articular mobility of the cranial bones
- The involuntary mobility of the sacrum between the ilia

What to Expect
When you arrive for your appointment your Osteopath will carryout an initial consultation which will include:
- Asking questions about your problem, general health, medication that you’re taking. This information is strictly confidential.
- Examine you properly. It is likely the osteopath will ask you to remove some of your clothing. Tell your osteopath if you are uncomfortable about this. You should expect privacy to undress and a gown or towel should be provided. You can ask a friend or relative to accompany you and be present throughout your treatment.
- Ask you to make simple movements and stretches to observe your posture and mobility. Because of the body’s structure, pain or stiffness you are experiencing in one part may be linked to a problem elsewhere.
- Examine the health of the joints, tissues and ligaments using their hands and a highly developed sense of touch called palpation.
