Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together. All Osteopaths are registered with General Osteopathic Council.

An Osteopath considers, for your body to work well, its structure must also work well. So osteopaths work to restore your body to a state of balance, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery. Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching, mobilisation and massage to increase the mobility of your joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. We also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.

Osteopathy was founded by Andrew Taylor Still in 1874. The 4 key principles of Osteopathy Treatments are:

  1. The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.
  2. The body is capable of self regulation, self healing, and health maintenance.
  3. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
  4. Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of
body unity, self regulation, and the inter-relationship of structure and function.

What to Expect

When you arrive for your appointment your Osteopath will carryout an initial consultation which will include:

  • Asking questions about your problem, general health, medication that you’re taking. This information is strictly confidential.
  • Examine you properly. It is likely the osteopath will ask you to remove some of your clothing. Tell your osteopath if you are uncomfortable about this. You should expect privacy to undress and a gown or towel should be provided. You can ask a friend or relative to accompany you and be present throughout your treatment.
  • Ask you to make simple movements and stretches to observe your posture and mobility. Because of the body’s structure, pain or stiffness you are experiencing in one part may be linked to a problem elsewhere.
  • Examine the health of the joints, tissues and ligaments using their hands and a highly developed sense of touch called palpation.

What to Wear

It will be necessary for your Osteopath to carry out an examination and they will require to observe and touch areas of your body causing concern.  If you are uncomfortable undressing to your underwear the Osteopath may be able to suggest clothing, such as shorts and T Shirt, or close fitting garments, that will enable them to work effectively without making you feel uncomfortable, so please do discuss this. You are welcome to bring someone with you into the examination room if this puts you at ease.
